“Over five years ago, we launched ‘Charity Pearl – The Gambia’. This was created in an effort to stop the trap of poverty for the children of the Mo-Beta kindergarten and primary school in The Gambia. We empower children from the ages of 3-12 years old through education, so that they may have a better future. From the beginning, we found that the biggest factor that hampered these children’s learning, was one of the most basic human needs – food! Children were so hungry that they could not concentrate. Malnutrition and illness puts education on the back burner and it is often never revisited again.
In order to give these children a chance, Charity Pearl began with a summer camp three years ago that started with just a handful of volunteers from Slovenia. They helped to raise funds for school meals, which they then prepared and cooked for the children. It was amazing to see the difference that a full belly can make! The summer camp provided a place where children could learn, be motivated by new experiences, and begin to realize that they do have options in life.
Not only do the children become greatly impacted through a greater chance at life, but also our volunteers are impacted as well. No matter how long they stay, the experience of volunteering in The Gambia will inevitably have an impact upon them. These impacts can be lasting, changing the way in which these individuals see the world they live in and the path they choose to take in life.
We like to say we are not just a charity organization, we are a smile factory – putting smiles on the children and our volunteers faces. That is the reason we love our job.”0
